Technology. Some journalists get it. Others don’t know where to begin.
MuckTech is a website designed for both.
Wikipedia defines a muckraker as someone who “seeks to expose corruption of businesses or government to the public.” Since the goal of this site is to expose journalists to technology, the name seemed logical. MuckTech will consist of several components, although some will be more obvious than others at the beginning.
MuckTech will offer hardware reviews that pertain to journalists. Cameras, e-readers, camcorders, computers and anything else that I can get my hands on.
Software and web applications are some of the best assets a journalist has in the new media landscape. There are a ton of tools out there that can help journalists tell a story, and my goal is to test as many as possible.
Commentary is my area to spout off on the latest journalism news. However, if you are reading this, you are obviously smart and figured that out.
Zero 2 Web Hero (Z2WH) is a tutorial for journalists who are new to creating a web presence. The series will start with the basics (hosting, installing WordPress, creating a brand) and guide the reader through creating a revenue-generating website.
Finally, MuckTech is about community. I LOVE to hear how a journalist is using something I reviewed in a way I never imagined. Once a week/month (depending on the number of comments I receive), I hope to post the best ideas suggested by my readers. Also, if you have a story idea you would like to discuss here that could benefit the readers, feel free to email me at jd [at] mucktech.com.
These are the basics, but I also have plans for much more. I hope you enjoy this site, find it useful and stop back often. Please tell your friends and colleagues as well. You can follow us on Twitter (@MuckTech) or become a fan on Facebook.
Welcome to MuckTech
